Thailand advances Gripen E acquisition: RTAF Press Conference set for June 4

The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has scheduled a press conference for June 4, 2025, to provide updates on its planned acquisition of Saab’s Gripen E fighter jets. This follows the Thai government’s endorsement of the RTAF’s decision to procure the Swedish-made aircraft to modernize its aging fleet of F-16A/B fighters.
The initial procurement involves four Gripen E aircraft at an estimated cost of 19 billion baht (approximately US$582 million), with plans to acquire eight additional units. The package is expected to include MBDA Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles and upgrades to the RTAF’s Saab 340 airborne early warning aircraft.
The Gripen E was selected over the U.S.-made F-16 Block 70/72, as it better aligns with the RTAF’s strategic and tactical requirements. The upcoming press conference is anticipated to confirm the procurement details and outline the timeline for delivery and integration into the RTAF’s operations.
This acquisition marks a significant step in Thailand’s efforts to enhance its air defense capabilities and reflects a broader trend of diversifying military partnerships. Further details are expected to be disclosed during the June 4 briefing.
