Jakarta, May 28, 2025 — Indonesia is set to expand its fleet of Rafale fighter jets, as announced during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to the country. In a meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, a letter of intent was signed outlining the acquisition of 12 new Rafale aircraft, in addition to Scorpène submarines and other French military equipment.

This new agreement complements the contract signed in 2022, under which Indonesia ordered 42 Rafale jets from French manufacturer Dassault Aviation, with deliveries expected to begin in 2026. The expansion of the partnership also includes co-production plans and technology transfer, strengthening the strategic cooperation between the two countries.

Indonesia’s decision comes amid discussions on diversifying defense suppliers, including ongoing talks to acquire Chinese J-10C fighter jets. However, the continued collaboration with France signals renewed confidence in the capabilities of French military equipment and in deepening bilateral relations.

In addition to the fighter jets, the deal includes the purchase of two Scorpène submarines and 13 ground-based radar systems from Thales, five of which will be installed in Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara. These acquisitions are part of Indonesia’s efforts to modernize its armed forces and enhance its national defense industry.

Macron’s visit to Indonesia is part of a tour through Southeast Asia aimed at strengthening France’s presence in the region and promoting strategic partnerships in defense, trade, and sustainability.
