Bangkok, June 4, 2025 — The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has officially confirmed its selection of the Saab Gripen E/F as its future multi-role fighter, marking a major step toward modernizing the nation’s air combat capabilities. The Swedish manufacturer Saab, in partnership with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), will now enter the next phase of the procurement process with Thai authorities.

While no formal contract has been signed yet, the announcement signals Thailand’s intent to strengthen its air force with one of the world’s most advanced fighter aircraft. The Gripen E/F variant offers enhanced radar, sensor fusion, electronic warfare systems, and long-range strike capabilities.

Saab’s proposal includes the aircraft and its associated systems and a comprehensive long-term offset package. This offset program is designed to boost Thailand’s national security and strategic autonomy while creating jobs and attracting new investment across multiple sectors of Thai society. Specific details of the offsets remain under discussion.

“We welcome the Royal Thai Air Force’s selection of Gripen E/F as its future fighter and look forward to the next steps in this procurement process,” said Saab President and CEO Micael Johansson. “Gripen E/F is the best solution to provide Thailand with independent airpower for the future, which will contribute significantly to the nation’s safety and security.”

Thailand has operated the earlier Gripen C/D models since 2011. The choice to continue with the Gripen platform underscores the RTAF’s satisfaction with Saab’s performance and support, as well as a strategic decision to ensure continuity in operations, training, and maintenance.

Saab, headquartered in Sweden, is a leading global defense and security company employing over 25,000 people. Its portfolio includes cutting-edge systems in aeronautics, sensors, weapons, command and control, and underwater technologies. The company plays a significant role in the defense industries of several countries, including partnerships for the F-X programs in Brazil and now with this potential deal in Thailand.

If finalized, the agreement would further cement Thailand’s role as a key Saab customer in Southeast Asia and contribute to regional stability through the modernization of its air force.
