Brazilian Defense Minister Visits Future ‘Oiapoque’ Multipurpose Dock Ship
During an official visit to the United Kingdom this week, Brazil’s Defense Minister José Mucio Monteiro toured the future multipurpose dock ship NDM Oiapoque (ex-HMS Bulwark) and reviewed the final stages of its revitalization ahead of its incorporation into the Marinha do Brasil.
According to the Navy’s Strategic Communications Center, the vessel—set to become the second-largest warship in Brazil’s fleet—is scheduled to enter operational service on June 30, with arrival in Brazil expected in October.
During the visit, briefings covered crew training and the remaining steps toward commissioning, while the minister emphasized the ship’s multipurpose profile, which will expand the Navy’s ability to conduct complex operations ranging from military missions and logistical support to humanitarian assistance and emergency response.
Measuring 176 meters in length and displacing 18,000 tons, the Oiapoque can reach speeds of up to 34 km/h, operate up to two large helicopters, transport armored vehicles and ambulances, carry field hospitals, and transport food and medical supplies. The ship will host a crew of up to 290 sailors and accommodate around 700 troops, strengthening naval presence, disaster relief, and the protection of Brazil’s maritime jurisdiction, the Navy said.■
