Turkey launches third Reis-class submarine ‘TCG Muratreis’

On May 29, 2025, Türkiye (Turkey) launched TCG Muratreis (S-334), the third submarine of the Reis-class (Type 214TN), from the Gölcük Shipyard Command. The event marks a significant milestone in the country’s national submarine development program.
Based on the German Type 214 design, the Reis-class submarines feature air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems that enable extended submerged operations. This makes them highly stealthy and capable of littoral and open-sea missions.
Muratreis has advanced sonar systems, heavyweight torpedoes, and submarine-launched Harpoon anti-ship missiles. The vessel also incorporates indigenous systems developed by Turkish defense industries, including command and control and electronic warfare suites.
The launch of TCG Muratreis strengthens the Turkish Navy’s submarine fleet and underlines Türkiye’s commitment to enhancing its naval capabilities through localized production and technology transfer. The submarine is expected to enter active service following sea trials and final outfitting in 2026.
